In October 2023, our cartography program intake spent 10 days exploring the Dachstein Mountains. We were very lucky with the weather and had an 10 amazing sunny days out there, hiking and learning everything about field cartography and the Dachstein. During the field trip, it was also my first time participating in an orienteering event and let me tell you… it was actually so much fun!
This panorama map was one of the group assignments we had to complete. The goal was to come up with your own topic, collect the data you needed in one day, and make the map once we were back home. Aesthetics played a big part in the grade so we could be creative. We had about 3 weeks to make the map. Our group’s idea was to create a panorama map that showed possible hiking trails to spots for catching the sunset or sunrise. We had a very rough idea and presented it during the field trip but everything came together as we started making the map.
My Role
- Created the background illustration of the mountains from a field photo using Photoshop and Illustrator
- Created the sunset, sunrise, and clouds using Illustrator
- Styled the graphic elements: civil twilight chart, trails, legend, and title.
“Which one is Dachstein?
Third from the left!”
